Product Description
Exclusive Look at the 2020-2022 Ram 1500 & 2500 12-Inch Uconnect System
The 2020-2022 Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks solidified their position as leaders in-cabin technology with the commanding 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen. This impressive unit, which includes the radio, navigation, and climate controls within a single bezel, serves as the centerpiece of the modern Ram interior. While visually similar across these years, a significant software upgrade in 2022 marked a key difference in the user experience.
Design and Integration
The 12-inch display is a portrait-oriented marvel that integrates multiple truck functions into one interface. The unit is comprised of the touchscreen itself, the surrounding bezel which includes physical buttons for essential climate controls (temperature and fan speed) and audio (volume and tuning knobs), and the radio module housed behind the screen. For purchasing or replacement, these components are typically sold as a single, complete unit.
A key design feature is the blend of touchscreen controls with redundant physical buttons, allowing drivers to quickly adjust common settings without navigating through menus. Climate functions, including temperature, fan speed, and defrost, can be managed either through the screen or the buttons flanking it.
Year-by-Year System Evolution
2020-2021: Uconnect 4C NAV
For the 2020 and 2021 model years, both the Ram 1500 and 2500 were equipped with the Uconnect 4C NAV system. This system was widely praised for its user-friendly interface and comprehensive features:
Navigation: Integrated navigation with pinch-and-zoom mapping.
Smartphone Integration: Standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ (wired connection).
Connectivity: SiriusXM® with 360L, a 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot, and Ram Connect services.
Customization: A split-screen function allowed for the display of two applications simultaneously, such as navigation on the top half and audio controls on the bottom.
2022: The Upgrade to Uconnect 5
The 2022 model year heralded a major technological leap with the introduction of the Uconnect 5 system. While housed in the same 12-inch display, the new system offered significantly enhanced performance and features:
Faster Performance: Uconnect 5 is notably faster and more responsive than its predecessor, with increased processing power and memory.
Wireless Connectivity: The most significant upgrade was the introduction of wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, eliminating the need for a cable.
Enhanced Features: The system brought an improved user interface, Alexa "In-Vehicle" Assistant, and over-the-air update capabilities for maps and software.
Improved Customization: It allows for the creation of multiple user profiles that save individual preferences for climate, music, and vehicle settings.
Trim Level Availability
The 12-inch touchscreen was a premium feature primarily found on upper-level trims across the 2020-2022 model years.
Ram 1500:
2020-2021: Standard on the Limited and Laramie Longhorn trims. It was a popular available option on the Laramie and Rebel models, and in some cases, could be optioned on the Big Horn.
2022: Standard on the Limited and Laramie trims. It was widely available as an option on the Big Horn, Rebel, and Limited Longhorn.
Ram 2500:
2020-2021: Standard on the top-tier Limited trim. It was available as an option on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and in some packages for the Big Horn.
2022: Became standard on the Limited and was an available option on most other trims from the Big Horn upward, including Laramie and Limited Longhorn.
Interchangeability and Upgrades
While the 12-inch units for the Ram 1500 and 2500 are physically similar, there can be differences in part numbers and software programming, particularly for heavy-duty models equipped with the Cummins diesel engine. When considering a swap or upgrade, it is crucial to ensure the part number is compatible with the specific vehicle model and powertrain to ensure all features function correctly. Upgrading from a Uconnect 4 to a Uconnect 5 system is possible but requires a new radio module and potentially a wiring harness adapter, in addition to the screen and bezel.
